Highlight, extract, and cloze
Turn a passage you’re reading into cloze Items in a single reading pass.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- Open a Topic in the Reader or Review so you have reading material in front of you. To import one first, see Import a web page.
- This guide covers the reading-to-recall workflow. For the full deletion grammar (hints, multiple blanks, edge cases), see Cloze syntax.
-
Select the text you care about inside the Topic. Extract and Cloze appear with it: in the Reader, in the selection toolbar; in Review, in a menu over the selection, alongside highlight colors, Ignore on re-read, and Delete. Each shows its key.
-
Create an Extract to keep narrowing. With text selected, press X (or click Extract). This creates a child Extract you can keep reading and selecting from. It keeps the selection’s formatting, formulas and images, and inherits the parent’s Source reference. The text you extracted stays highlighted in the Topic, each Extract on its own: Extracts next to each other take turns between yellow and amber, each starts with an edge, and pointing at one lights up all of it. Click it to open that Extract. Extracts let you carve a long passage down before you commit to a flashcard. For the reasoning behind this layered workflow, see Incremental reading.
-
Make a cloze Item. Select the words to hide and press Z (or click Cloze). Kioku wraps the selection as
{{c1::…}}in a new Item and creates a Cloze Card. A formula can be the hidden part: select it and press Z, and the answer is revealed as the formula. In the Reader, Z first shows the passage around your selection, with its sentence bracketed. Drag or click to change how much the card shows and which words it hides, then choose Cloze. On a page you haven’t imported, that passage is saved as a small Topic of its own, and the page stays unimported; Import whole article imports the page instead. On an imported page, the card goes under the page’s Topic.
While reading and while writing
Section titled “While reading and while writing”A Topic in Review and the Reader’s notes open to read, so the single keys above act on your selection. Other single keys do too: M highlights, I marks text to ignore when you re-read, and Delete cuts what you’ve finished with.
To change the text, press Enter (or select Edit). While you write, letters type, so the same actions take Option (Alt on Windows and Linux): Option+X for an Extract, Option+Z for a Cloze, and Cmd+Shift+H (Ctrl+Shift+H) to highlight. Press Esc to go back to reading. A Topic or Extract in Browse is always ready to write in, so it uses these keys too. See Write and format text.
Add hints and multiple clozes
Section titled “Add hints and multiple clozes”Selecting text and pressing Z always produces a single {{c1::…}} deletion. To add a hint or split a passage into several blanks, author the Cloze in the editor instead:
- Go to Browse (press 3) and select the Topic or Extract.
- Choose Create Cloze (press C) to open the card editor in cloze mode.
- In the rich-text body, select text and click Mark cloze (c1) (or press F6). Each click wraps the selection and moves on to the next number, counting on from the highest cloze already in the text.
- Use a new number for each blank you want as a separate Card; reuse the same number for blanks that should be hidden together.
- Click Create Card.
A hint is a trailing ::hint in the markup, for example {{c1::Paris::city}}. See Cloze syntax for the complete grammar.
Result
Section titled “Result”Each distinct cloze number becomes its own Card; the Cards sit under a single Item element, which is scheduled in your review Queue and graded by FSRS. Your Extracts stay in place, so you can keep reading from where you left off.
